Gold hallmark XXX and sideways W. 08-27-2011 02:42 PM. Can anyone tell me anything about these hallmarks in a Victorian gold ring? I tried to research and found that the W is likely from a jeweler in Brooklyn, early 1900s, which later became the company Art-Carved, but I couldn't find what purity the XXX stand for. Any experts who could tell me?

I can assure you, the XXX does NOT mean the ring is 14k or 18k gold. I have had dozens of rings with this early JR Wood (who would become Art Carved) maker mark variation. The XXX mark signifies 10K gold content/purity. For more information see our JR Wood & Sons archives:

The ring is a wedding band decorated with carved baskets of flowers. The only mark of any kind on the inside of the ring is: XXXX. I would appreciate any information anyone can supply about the origin, age, or goldsmith who make the ring. Click here to read or post comments
