    Ferdinand J. Dreer was born in Philadelphia in 1812, the son of Frederick Dreer and Augusta Frederica Nolthenius. Ferdinand Dreer was apprenticed to a jeweler and also learned how to assay metals. He established businesses in partnership first with John Annan and later with George Hayes.
