Started by the Birmingham Jewellers & Silversmiths Association in a branch of the Municipal School of Art in Ellen Street, the present building in Vittoria Street opened in 1890 in a former goldsmith's factory of 1865 designed by J G Bland. The conversion was carried out by local architects Martin & Chamberlain.
