In an effort to standardize birthstones, the American National Association of Jewelers met in 1912 and officially adopted a list. In 1952 the Jewelry Industry Council of America updated the list by adding Alexandrite to June and citrine to November. They also added pink tourmaline to October and replaced lapis with zircon for December.
