As a total novice on the subject, from what I can determine, 975 is a made-up number from the Asian marketplace for some sort of alloy that may (or may not?) contain yellow or white gold. At least, 975 doesn't seem to be a US or European standard.

Fine silver (.999) is pure in form and too soft to be used in most jewellery and certainly not practical for hardwearing jewelry like rings. Sometimes, 975 is misread with the actual silver content being 925.
